Saskatoon Summer Players (SSP) is a community-based, non-profit organization whose purpose is to celebrate its distinguished past, and produce and perform musical theatre of professional quality.
From its inception in 1964 to the present day, SSP has been a volunteer-based and volunteer-supported non-profit organization. It has staged high quality full-scale Broadway musicals for the enjoyment of theatre-goers, while providing unique on and off stage opportunities for local artists and artisans.
SSP began as a group of dedicated amateurs working out of Knox United Church who mounted their first production, “Oklahoma”, in 1964.
SSP has presented one “main-stage” musical in late June/early July every year since then, and from time to time has produced a second smaller show, and recently has also produced a series of reviews each February. SSP has always drawn on the considerable talents of amateur on-stage performers and off-stage volunteers from the community. All concerned have taken considerable pride in mounting shows of high quality.
- While SSP is known for producing family-friendly entertainment, we also produce some edgier pieces. SSP is the first Saskatoon theatre company to produce RENT and SWEENEY TODD.
- SSP is a membership organization that is open to the public.
- SSP now offers three shows per season with a fall presentation, a mid-winter cabaret-style performance, and the largest show of our season takes place in June/July each year.
There are many great options for theatre in Saskatoon, but what makes SSP truly unique is not only the scope of the productions, with 50 people often appearing on stage, but the fact that you too can get involved. SSP relies on the many skills and abilities of our volunteer theatre artists from a variety of backgrounds to produce musical theatre for all of Saskatoon (and beyond) to enjoy. Join us!
